　 英語表現には、牛を表す言葉として、cow、ox、bullの３つがあるようだ。cowは乳搾りに適した牝牛、oxは去勢されて荷車を引くような雄牛のことであるとか。それに対してbullは、調教されていない野生の牛。闘牛はfighting bullと表現されるとか。

　さて、禅の話題の中で定番とされている十牛図の牛は、どのように表現されているのだろうか。いままではTen Bullsと表現されるものと勝手に思い込んでいたが、この本においては、十牛図は、「The Ten Oxherding Pictures」と名付けられている。

　それに対して、「Ｚen Flesh, Zen Boneｓ」では、オーソドックスに「１０Bulls」として紹介されている。なるほど、と思ってよく見ると、１０枚の牛の絵がそれぞれに別の英語表現になっているところがなかなか興味深い。

　見比べてみると、いずれも味わい深い。英語表現も、両方面白い。でもこの差が、二つの書のキャラクターの違いを表しているようでもある。でも、去勢されたＯＸよりは、野生のＢｕｌｌのほうが十牛図の訳語としてはフィットしているかな。
